SunSmart Program NT.
The SunSmart program is dedicated to reducing skin cancer incidence, morbidity and mortality through a targeted prevention and early detection program improving awareness, knowledge, attitudes and behaviour relating to Ultraviolet (UV) exposure.
For Schools and Early Learning Centres
Sun exposure in the first 10 years of life significantly increases the incidence of all types of skin cancer. We can stop skin cancer in its track if we educate our children on being SunSmart and create supportive environments that facilitate Sun Safety.
Cancer Council NT officers teach children at early learning centres and schools how to be SunSmart with evidence-based and up-to-date sun protection policy and advice.
In April 2016, all Northern Territory government schools and approved education and care services (including preschools and out-of-school-hours care services) were mandated to develop and implement Sun Safety Policy along with sun protective school uniform and dress codes, to prevent students being harmed through excessive exposure to extreme heat and ultraviolet radiation (UV radiation).

We all want our students and early childhood community to be able to learn and play outdoors, so we need to support children to know the risk of UV. Skin cancer risk is almost entirely preventable with good UV protection.
Help Cancer Council NT implement SunSmart habits to NT schools and early learning centres and encourage the use of all five forms of sun protection.

For Organisations and Workplaces

People who work outdoors receive up to 10 times more sun exposure than indoor workers.
Sun exposure in the workplace can increase the incidence of all types of skin cancer, representing a major work hazard for employees who spend some, or all, of their working days outdoors. We can stop skin cancer in its track if we educate our staff on being SunSmart and create supportive environments and UV protection policies that facilitate Sun Safety.
